After about 20 minutes, I plugged it back in and it seems to befunctioning fineJust to clarify, the signal chain is as follows. Guitar > Boss MT2 > Allen & Heath Mixer > Insert BBE Sonic Max >Avalon VT 747 Most levels were normal (-3dB) except for the 747, which was crankedto 11 in all respects. The guitar tone was incredible and I was rocking out until smoke camebillowing out. Are there any ideas as to what might have happened? After I opened it up, I could find no trace of any components burnedor charred. Everything looked clean. Again, everything seems to be working fine now. Guest Guest #2 Archived from groups: rec.audio.pro (More info?)Try following your nose - get as close to the pcb and components as possible and sniff away until you smell something burnt. Best turn off the unit first in case you flash fry your nose hairs.Gareth."muthasmucka" wrote in message news:[email protected]...>I was driving ( overdriving ) my Avalon 747 and it started to smoke. Wondering if there is a problem with this unit I am using. Registered User Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,532 🎧 15 years Of course it would change. If the side chain is EQ'd, why wouldn't you expect the tone to change when hitting SC listen? You're not listening to the main signal path, obviously, when you hit SC listen, so any processing on the main path is not heard. On the 747, looking at my unit, the SC filters start at 60 Hz and 10kHz at the lowest and highest points, so just by having SC listen on, you're already bandwidth-limiting the audio, which is what the SC filters are designed to do! Also, the EQ in the SC is just designed to modify the behaviour of the compressor, so will not be of the same quality as the main signal path.As an aside, if you're using an EQ in the side chain of any compressor, it doesn't have to be high quality at all, since the signal going through them will never be heard! Cheap graphics are often great for this purpose. And AidyHall you are not correct about it being bandwidth limited, Avalon states that you can use the side chain EQ as

A parametric EQ on the primary audio path. So since you actually own a 747, does yours drop the level and tone of the primary audio path? Registered User Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,532 🎧 15 years I used to own a 747sp, but only used the sidechain EQ to feed the sidechain. I wonder if the sidechain path (when in SC listen mode) bypasses the makeup gain stage. That could explain the difference in level. The sidechain would also not pass through the tube signal path, if you had that engaged. Lives for gear Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 733 🎧 15 years The replies above don't make much sense to me. The graphic eq and the tube in or out still affects the signal with "SC Listen" engaged... so without a schematic or a call into Avalon (does anyone from Avalon wander these forums as I could be wrong?)... but just using my own ears, I think the "SC Listen" just adds the parametric eq to the signal path.To answer your question, Top Knob -- yes, I think your unit is fine. With the compressor off... try engaging the "SC Listen" and push 2khz to the 10:00 mark (the 2nd mark to the left (boosting frequencies in the parametric "SC Listen" is counter-clockwise)) -- On the unit we have here -- when pushing 2khz to the 2nd line to the left of 12:00 with "SC Listen" engaged... the volume and tone is pretty similar to when the "SC Listen" is not engaged. Let me know if this makes sense and what your findings are. Do you have a similar result? I think that what we had talked about and what you have supposed above is the case... that engaging the parametric eq changes the tone as you are putting
